<description>In 2003, the office was asked to provide a new office for a chiropractic neurologist. The existing space is 2,400sf. The project goals were to evaluate / design a new office for patients to be seen, as well as accommodations for a staff of 10-14 people. The new space included six treatment rooms, three offices, therapy, rehabilitation, and x-ray facilities.
The design solution included a large glass enclosed rehabilitation space with treatment rooms situated in a ring around this central room.

<description>Developing a scheme for a fashion museum competition, which the program stipulated as a tower typology, created a challenge. This project –located in Tokyo, Japan --is an attempt to bridge two competing directives: a repository for art (requiring anonymity in the architecture, particularly of the interior spaces) coupled with a program request that the new building serve as an icon and a “destination”.
In the end, we elected to use the language of fashion, coupled with symbolic references, to solidify the building concept and emphasize the fashion elements over the more formal architectonic language.

The project skin is divided into three parts:
	1. the core; dress form (a frame to support the active skin of the building):
	2. operable louvers; pleats (sun control):
	3. perforated panel shell; photovoltaic cells; veil (solar shading).

Our proposal seeks to determine the “sensual” needs of the building function and give it an architectural response.

To view a fashion museum as a sensuous building, we need to set about organizing space and laying out structure in such a way that we emphasize those elements of the various components that can best amplify conditions in the opposing medium. We have structured this project in a way that is very similar to the way fashion design resolves the issues it sets out to address.

The building mirrors its contents.

		<description>Our first project.
A 30,000sf office for a web design and development company that grew to 100+ employees very quickly. We were challenged to spend very little, maximize "presence", and create a dynamic work environment.....all while they were working in the space.

<description>Begun as a side project --in truth: an "anti-architecture" --the string sculptures were part of the office output from 2000 to 2005.
We are seeking new venues that might offer a longer installation. Many of these projects were up for less than 48 hours.

<description>We always appreciate design problems that challenge. Our request in this instance was to design and install a bedroom door to close a four-foot wide hall that is 18 feet tall. The house itself is industrial in aesthetic, and the door needed to address this theme.
The solution required a custom-designed steel frame system that held thin layers of silk-impregnated translucent sheets. At 350 pounds, balancing the rolling assembly was key, but it resulted in a minimal effort needed to open and close.

<description>Located on the shore of San Francisco Bay, this project design is for a new house in Marin --roughly 4,000 square feet --for a couple and their young son. They were seeking a house that opened to the water, but allowed privacy from the uphill neighbors at the entry side.
Reusing the existing foundation and a number of walls, this project is an exploration in bringing increased value and space from an existing footprint.

<description>Working under a budget of $40,000, we were asked if we could design a replacement for the lower level façade of this two unit residential structure.

Restructuring the façade to help balance the inelegant building mass, we also created a gated vestibule to make a more gradual transition from city sidewalk to residence entry.
We were keen to maintain ample natural light.
For privacy from the sidewalk, we used a translucent glass. We were seeking a window with visual weight while still allowing natural light and outside movement to filter through.

The solution was a plate steel window frame, hot rolled, natural finish, with a heavy glass infill. The glass is a custom double insulated unit that featured two panes using two different glass patterns.

Starting with a modest premise, we eventually developed a very challenging compositional wall –balancing the upper level “frivolity” of trim and “beef” in massing with a lower level aesthetic rooted in practicality, thin lines, low cost, and exposed structure.

<description>To maintain budget on an Owner-built residence, the design of this house is such that the structure is minimized while the efficiency of exterior wall is maximized. The deep narrow site allows long vistas within, helping the house appear larger than its 2,400 square feet. The south-facing walls are orchestrated as filters for natural light through the central hallway "slot".

<description>Located on a very steep site in San Francisco, three contiguous lots were assembled to allow for the development of a "hybrid" housing typology. This project of three new homes, grouped around three interior courts, seeks to move beyond either the "one off" signature or the direct Victorian "interpretation". This project is a more communally referenced, potentially scaleable, model that remains both place-specific and strategically eco-sensitive.
Our typological solution combines two basic ideas into one. These buildings expand the traditional interior light well into a full light 'court' --aligned across all three houses --allowing light much deeper into the interior sections.
While connection and integration were both of paramount concern, we've addressed the real world issue of personal privacy by way of a 'dynamic facade', wherein large window panels can be operated as awnings or casements, and sight lines can be controlled with a combination of sliding and folding internal louvers.
